Man of Steel Stars Reunite: Russell Crowe Joins Henry Cavill in Highlander Remake

Highlander Reboot

The new film is sure to add a fresh, high-octane twist to the Highlander mythos while paying homage to the original 1986 classic.

Highlander: A Tale of Immortality and Decapitations

For those unfamiliar with the original, Highlander follows Connor MacLeod, played by Christopher Lambert, a Scotsman from the 16th century who discovers that he is part of a rare group of immortals. These immortals, scattered across the globe, are bound together by a mysterious connection that leads them to battle each other in duels. The ultimate goal? To be the last one standing and claim “The Prize”—the power of immortality.

The original film, which featured a legendary soundtrack from Queen, saw Sean Connery as the wise Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, MacLeod’s mentor. Ramírez teaches Connor how to fight and prepare for his ultimate showdown with The Kurgan (played by Clancy Brown), one of the most fearsome immortals in the Highlander universe.

With Crowe and Cavill now stepping into the roles of mentor and student, the stakes in the new film are bound to be just as high. Crowe’s role as the experienced immortal who trains Cavill’s character promises to deliver an exciting new dynamic as the two actors share the screen once again—this time, with the fate of their characters hanging in the balance.

The Long Road to Highlander

The Highlander remake has been in the works for quite some time, with the project bouncing around Hollywood for years before finding its home with Stahelski in 2016. Known for his work on the John Wick series, Stahelski is no stranger to high-stakes action and expertly choreographed fight scenes. His involvement has generated a lot of buzz, especially since the Highlander franchise is ripe for a reboot with the kind of visceral, adrenaline-pumping action that Stahelski is known for.

Back in May, Stahelski confirmed that filming was set to start later this year. While the wait may be long, the director teased fans by saying, “In 2027 or 2028, you’ll be watching Highlander.”

What Can We Expect?

Given the direction of the John Wick films, we can expect the Highlander remake to be a thrilling, fast-paced ride, with a focus on both character-driven drama and breathtaking action sequences. With Crowe’s experience in intense, nuanced roles (like in Gladiator) and Cavill’s proven action chops from Mission: Impossible – Fallout and The Witcher, the chemistry between the two actors is sure to be electric. And let’s not forget that Stahelski’s expertise with martial arts and choreography will likely give us some of the best fight scenes we’ve seen in years.

While we won’t get to see this Highlander until the late 2020s, the reunion of Crowe and Cavill alone is enough to get fans excited. It’s a new chapter for both actors, and it’s clear that the remake will offer a fresh take on the story while honoring the legacy of the original film.

Until then, we’ll be sharpening our swords and waiting eagerly for more updates.
